Case Study #4: John Wooden
LIST-4923-CC4 - Special Topics
John Wooden is best known for his time as UCLA's Men’s Basketball Coach. Winning 10 NCAA National Titles in 12 years, 7 of which were consecutive, he is arguably one of the best coaches of all time. It is safe to say he knows a thing or two about successful leadership; but, he was known by those closest to him simply as Coach. It is this down to earth, keep things simple, way of life that made him relatable to not just those he coached but the masses.
In the attached TED Talk, he discusses what success means to him. He considers how those closest to him, especially his Dad, molded him into the person he became and the lessons he learned from them. Coach Wooden defined success as "Peace of mind attained only through self-satisfaction and knowing you did the best of which you are capable."
For this case study, I would like you to watch the video and pay close attention to the things he says we should all consider in order to be successful- not to win, but achieve personal success. From here, you are going to respond in 350 words discussing your take aways from Coach Wooden and come up with your own definition of success. This definition could be a list of characteristics or a few sentences. I am attaching his Pyramid of Success that he developed in an effort to teach what is required to work towards success and in turn leadership.
